The left letter is oldest one invented in China, and it represents shape of human.

There are a head, arm and body, a heart and legs in Kanji(letter). It depicts when human is looking at the heart because love is sometimes painful.

That means LOVE.

Then we gradually simplify the letter. The right one is latest and what we use now.
